Construction of Penn Medicine’s $1.5B Pavilion Nearing Completion

Penn Medicine

During the throes of the pandemic in the spring of 2020 and in the middle of constructing its new $1.5 billion hospital, Penn Medicine switched gears to focus on creating extra capacity at the building for a potential influx of Covid-19 patients.

A little more than a year later, Penn Medicine’s Pavilion is in its last few months of construction and, as part of that, completed a complicated exercise this week to place 15 steel beams and wall panels to enclose elevators on the roof of the 17-story, 1.5-million-square-foot building. It was an endeavor that involved fine-tuned logistics to protect people on the ground and nearby buildings, as well as the new hospital itself.

The elevator enclosure is on the exterior of the building because it serves a helipad on top of the pavilion, unlike a typical building where a penthouse falls within the general envelope of a structure. The elevators are used to bring patients transported by helicopter into the hospital.

“It was an interesting architectural puzzle to decide how that would look and work with the rest of the building,” said Stephen Greulich, associate vice president for large capital projects at Penn Medicine. “Once that got resolved, the cranes were already removed.”
