Comcast Spectacor is exploring the idea of converting part of the Fashion District mall into a life sciences development at the site where the Philadelphia 76ers have proposed building a new Center City arena. The plan, which includes lab and retail space along Market Street, was presented to the Washington Square West Civic Association on Aug. 26.
Comcast Spectacor has not confirmed whether it has approached Fashion District owner Macerich (NYSE: MAC) about the proposal. The Sixers currently have a purchase agreement with Macerich, pending city approvals, to build the arena—a project Macerich supports as it would reduce the mall’s size from 830,000 to 600,000 square feet.
As of early August, Macerich had not been contacted by Comcast Spectacor, according to a company representative.
